E-commerce & D2C

Intra-EU VAT, marketplace withholding and the MyData edge cases nobody documents.

What we see in this sector

The accounting difficulty in e-commerce is rarely the volume — platforms export clean data. It is that the same sale can be treated four different ways depending on where the customer sat and which marketplace processed the payment.

We reconcile to the payment processor rather than to the platform report. The two disagree more often than merchants expect, and the difference is usually the fee treatment.

Where it goes wrong

OSS and cross-border VAT

Registration thresholds, quarterly returns and the country-by-country rates that change without much warning.

Marketplace withholding

Where the platform is the deemed supplier, your VAT position is not what your sales report says it is.

MyData edge cases

Refunds, partial refunds, chargebacks and platform fees. Each has a correct treatment and none of them is obvious.

Stock and margin

Landed cost by SKU, so gross margin is a number you can act on rather than one you discover in March.

They reconcile to the payment processor, not the platform export. The first month they did it we found a four-figure fee treatment error that had been running for two years.
